Ann Louise Gittleman, PhD, CNS, New York Times bestselling author

Hibiscus Flower: Nature’s Secret for a Healthy Heart is the premier book in Leslie Taylor’s Rainforest Medicinal Plant Guide series—and for good reason. The flower of Hibiscus sabdariffa (commonly called roselle) is available as a natural, cost-effective, safe, and tasty herbal tea that has been validated through human clinical trials to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and address the main underlying causes of clogged arteries and heart diseases. This shouldn’t be kept a secret from American consumers any longer.

This book focuses on the research that confirms hibiscus flower’s many traditional uses in herbal medicine, including its incredible heart-healthy benefits, and provides a comprehensive consumer guide to help you choose a good product and prepare it correctly. Most important, Hibiscus Flower reveals the secrets of how to use this remedy effectively and at the correct dosages, which have been confirmed in human clinical trials. You may not be able to find this in-depth information elsewhere, especially from an unbiased and reliable source.

Read and learn, and then enjoy a healthy and delicious cup of hibiscus flower tea or a refreshing glass of iced hibiscus tea to improve your heart and your overall health.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Leslie Taylor is one of the world’s leading experts on rainforest medicinal plants and a leader in creating a worldwide market for the important medicinal plants of the Amazon rainforest. Previously, as a product manufacturer and bulk supplier, she was bound by the rules and regulations of the industry, which limited her ability to share vital information on the research that validated the effective uses of these powerful plants to positively affect our health. She closed her company and naturopathic practice to focus on sharing her extensive knowledge of these medicinal plants she’s used and studied for almost twenty years and to reveal the secrets of how to use these remarkable rainforest plants effectively. Leslie lives in Texas and is the best-selling author of The Healing Power of Rainforest Herbs.

Books in the Rainforest Medicinal Plant Guide series provide factual, scientific, and vital information on how to use these powerful medicinal plants effectively to improve your health.

Introduction:

Roselle is the common name for a tropical shrub in the Hibiscus plant family with a scientific name of Hibiscus sabdariffa. When the shrub’s flowers are harvested for use as a natural remedy, it is most commonly called hibiscus flowers. However, it is really the fleshy part of the flower that grows behind the petals (called a calyx) that is harvested, dried, and used in herbal supplements and remedies.

I have been researching, documenting, and writing about rainforest medicinal plants since 1995, and I must say, I rarely see a plant with so many human studies performed as have been conducted on hibiscus flowers. It is really unusual to see expensive human studies funded on a natural herbal remedy that cannot be patented and profited on by a single organization in hopes of recouping their research investment. Hibiscus flower is certainly the exception with dozens of human studies now validating its beneficial uses.

Human studies now confirm that hibiscus flowers can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and prevent clogged arteries without any of the side effects of the usual pharmaceutical drugs that treat these conditions. In fact, many people have used hibiscus flowers for these purposes in Latin America and Africa for many years, and this new research is simply confirming these traditional uses.

As a naturopath, I have used hibiscus flowers in my practice for more than 20 years to help people address high blood pressure and high cholesterol as well as clogged arteries and to improve heart function after a heart attack. It was the first natural remedy I turned to and relied on for these heart conditions. Although I have retired from my naturopathic practice, I still recommend hibiscus flowers to friends and family, including my husband, who no longer takes a statin drug or two out of three high blood pressure drugs he used to take. He’s been drinking this tasty flower tea daily for the last five years, and I grow roselle in my garden for him. His cardiologist doesn’t really want to know what he’s doing or taking, but at each annual checkup, the doctor just says, “Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it—everything looks great.”

Also included in this book is new information on how natural antioxidants, like those found in hibiscus flowers, are playing important roles to help prevent arterial plaque, clogged arteries, and lower blood pressure as well as keep the heart healthy and prevent heart disease. These same antioxidants are now clinically validated to promote healthy aging and prevent many of the chronic diseases and conditions associated with aging. They have also been shown to prevent and/or improve diabetes, obesity, and many other conditions, which will be discussed in this book.

Hibiscus flowers are a popular herbal remedy for all these conditions as well as others around the world, yet most Americans know very little about the plant or how to use it, and they are unaware of the hundreds of research studies validating its many benefits. Metric tons of hibiscus flowers are now being shipped into Europe for use in natural products because information about the heart-healthy benefits of hibiscus flower and the new research on it have been shared effectively in the European natural products industry.

It’s time to tell Americans how they can benefit from using this powerful natural remedy, and more important, how to use it effectively to improve their heart function and overall health. I hope the information in this book will help you discover the many effective uses of this wonderfully healthy flower and provide the hard-to-find information you need to find a good product, and take it in proper amounts.
